There are many cafeteria workers across the country that are working for low wages, and are struggling to make a living. Companies that are in contract with major food distributors like Sodexo and Aramark employ many of these workers [1]. These workers receive poor benefits, and minimal healthcare when working with the companies like Sodexo and Aramark [1], [2].  Because of these poor working conditions, many workers have tried to organize [3].  They have joined unions like UNITE HERE and SEIU to try and receive better benefits and wages [5]. But these unions often take advantage of their workers, and it can lead to the point to where the worker was worse off than they were before.  So what can the workers do to be better off and dodge being taking advantage of?

If the public became more aware of how large corporations like Sodexo are treating their workers, then they might opt for some change [4]. I propose that the government first starts a wide spread awareness of what is going on behind the scenes to food service employees. This could easily be achieved through the use of media, and with pressure from the public, the large food service corporations would most likely start treating their employees better. Once the food service corporations started treating their employees better, then the unions like UNITE HERE and SEIU would have to sotp taking advantageof their members, and the food service employees would be treated better [5]. However if the large corporations were not affected by the media and public, then the government could step in even farther.

Legislators could propose legislation to help regulate large corporations like Sodexo, Aramark, and Compass. My original contribution is to make a proposed bill tha tcould be sent to congress, to help control the large food service corporations. Within in the bill, i would state that all food service corporations must be required to pay their employees at least a living wage for the area a certain employee lives as determined by the U.S. government. The government would send officials on a bi-annual basis to ensure that the living wages were being paid. Also, the bill would require that employees would recieve a raise in their wages after a certian period of time such as five or ten years.
